The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office answers a lot of inquiries every day. Below you will find answers to some of the most common questions.

  • On July 1, 2022, the State of Indiana will no longer require a handgun permit to legally carry, conceal or transport a handgun within the state. This law DOES NOT allow everyone to carry a handgun as Indiana law contains certain criteria which must be met for a person to legally carry within the state. Please click here for more details.

  • Please visit our Records Division at the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to and 4:00 pm. You must have a photo ID to compete the request.

    If your company would like to get a pre-employment background check for a prospective employee, please contact the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office at 219.326.7700 Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.

  • Please contact our non-emergency dispatch at 219.362.6205 to request an officer to obtain a VIN check for the Indiana BMV.

  • Please contact the Warrants Division at the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office. The telephone number is 219.326.7700 ext. 2664/2427/2338.

  • Bond or bail money is accepted between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm at the County Clerk’s Office. Bonds are taken 24/7 at the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office lobby. To find out the amount of the bail you may call 219.326.7700 and choose option 1 or visit the Inmate Information Website.

  • To pick up an accident, crash, or incident report you may come to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office Monday through Friday, 8 am - 4 pm. You may also purchase crash reports at buycrash.com.

  • To put money on an inmate's commissary you may visit our kiosk in the La Porte County Sheriff’s lobby. Deposits can also be made online at Tiger Commissary. The jail does not accept cash at the counter, only in the kiosk.

  • Your safety is important. If this is an emergency, dial 911 right away. Don't wait to report the crime later.

    We'll ask you for some information about the crime you're reporting. Make sure you have all of this readily available:

    • Street address where the crime took place

    • City, State, and Zip Code

    • Date of the Incident

    • Time of the Incident

    • Description of the Incident

    Remain Anonymous

    You have the option of remaining anonymous or providing your contact information so that investigators can follow up with you directly with any additional questions. Please be as specific as possible to give investigators the best opportunity to follow up on your crime or tip.

  • On Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, and New Year’s Eve, fireworks may be discharged from 9 am to 12 am. Any other day of the year, fireworks may be discharged from 9 am to 11 pm. It is important, however, to check with local officials as local ordinances may restrict usage.
